I had a Sub Legacy in the 90s and brand has come long way on build quality and finish while still having the safety and reliability I want.

1 Aug

Overall I am pleased with the Outback and so far would recommend it to anyone looking for a small to midsize wagon/SUV.

19 May

It's a perfect balance between SUV and wagon.

2 Apr

I must say this 2020 Outback Limited is really a joy, with great ride comfort, roominess front and back, leather seats, moon roof, quiet ride, great responsiveness, excellent 4 wheel traction, just a wonderful wagon mechanically.

12 Jan

Stylish design between SUV and wagon.

8 Nov

The Subaru Outback continues to provide an efficient, comfortable and practical wagon in a crowded crossover category.

19 May

Was prepared to be disappointed with the CVT transmission

28 Mar

The engine shut down/stert up is abrupt as it says in many reviews, acceleration and shifting isn’t as smooth as the civic with a CVT,

14 Feb

but wish it had a conventional transmission.

21 Jan

They automatically reset to first gear at every stop then it will not respond if you try to quickly upshift to avoid the whine.

20 Nov

The single biggest issue is the standard engine/transmission package.

11 Nov

The CVT transmission has a slight lag with sudden acceleration,

12 Jan

Takes time to get used to CVT transmission and quirky auto on/off feature,

7 Nov

And I did a U turn to the left and I hit the left manual shifter, and the transmission dropped into low gear and of course the engine started racing.

19 Aug

This makes for poor protection agains small particles that hit the windshield when driving down the highway (I can't imagine how you can drive down an unpaved road without a problem).

13 Aug

However, with less than 5000 miles, I have a cracked windshield.

3 Jun

You might damage the front fenders ($2500 to repair) Wash the car on a sunny day and you will crack the windshield (About $1000) Hit an insect at over 40 mph?

27 Nov

However, I just happened upon some Internet comments and then the NHTSA website that has dozens of complaints about windshield cracking on the 2020 models and now one in the last week on the 2021 model.

18 May

The biggest problem is a windshield.

28 Jul

I HATE the jerkiness of how the engine restarts at stop lights.

22 Jul

Car has know stereo bluetooth connection issues, Bad window motor regulator after 1 month of purchase.

10 Jul

not much acceleration and the engine is loud when you push it.

13 Jun

The turbo engine can be a little wild in urban traffic,

28 May

While the engine has plenty of power and only needs regular gas, it lacks refinement and is somewhat rough.

30 Apr

The cons: Gas mileage should be better for a 185HP 4 cylinder- I am averaging 21.5MPG.

3 Apr

engine should shut off when stopped at proper setting

I really hate the automatic engine shut off.

10 Aug

The dealer offered no explanation other than the battery was dead when I took it in.

9 Apr

I only have 4 thousand miles an already the airbag module failed, the battery had to be replaced, the automatic climate control.

18 Feb

Had my 2021 Subaru XT for less than 5 days and the battery died.

7 Nov

In a hybrid car, the battery keeps the A/C running when the engine shuts down.

30 Apr

Road and engine noise seems excessive and the car is under powered- the turbo would have been better. The sound system is just meh.

25 Apr

My previous Outback had absolutely no rattles or squeaks,

20 Mar

I strongly recommend the XT turbo as I found the straight 4 under-powered and noisy.

21 Jan

Either the motor or the transmission makes a noise that's similar to a bicycle with a baseball card stuck in the spokes.

30 Jan

23 Nov

The Outback is a two row wagon that is great for seniors or families of four.

28 Jul

I HATE the jerkiness of how the engine restarts at stop lights.

2 Nov

Also new the tail light cover was broken and a trim piece on the outside kept coming loose, needed to be replaced.

27 Sep

Other times I pull up to a stop light as it turns red, so great time for it to cut off,

25 Aug

So if someone does a lot of driving, especially city, with the headlights, wipers and heater/ac off and they have the same issue I have, then that would explain why the battery keeps going dead.

31 Jan

Less than 12000 km on my 2020 outback and already I have had a faulty battery that left me stranded on my way to work, a radio recall and now my drivers side power window is failing.

16 Jan

Immediately suspecting transmission we took the car to dealer and sure enough it was indeed transmission failure.

29 Sep

but faulty half baked electronics ruined the experience.

6 May

We never threatened to sue-- all we asked was that they make things right by either replacing the car, or acknowledging the failure and repairing the brakes and EyeSight.

25 Aug

At 78 MPH or so the engine or transmission would stumble repeatedly, lose speed and drop in fuel mileage drastically.

26 Apr

(When the car decides not to accelerate, I had noticed that the rpms dropped considerably due to a shift in transmission ratios.)

9 Apr

Turning it off everytime you start the car is a pain, my work around which doesn't bother me, I guess because i'm used to driving stick shift as I come to a stop I pop the car into neutral, then when I stop back into drive it doesn't shut off.

Proven performance with first MAJOR snow storm with most other cars having difficulty on slipper roads, the Legacy has absolutely no difficulty.

7 Jun

I really like my Legacy, especially the mileage,

3 Jun

The car still performs just like I expect it to; meaning a smooth riding, smooth driving, supremely comfortable, utility station wagon that swallows up cargo like teenagers hoover up cheeseburgers.

27 Oct

This thing knocks and rattles more than any car I've ever owned.

1 Oct

After researching I found that Subaru had lost a class action law suit regarding the windshields cracking on older models.

10 Sep

Noise level is OK for this car.

22 Mar

The battery will die for no obvious reason and leave you stranded if you don't carry a jumper.

19 Jun

After 9 months, two batteries, and two dozen non starting mornings, it was obvious that more attention needs to be spent designing a vehicle that can function at a most basic level.

16 Sep

Don’t let the hatch go up because it continues to drain the battery while up.

23 Jul

28 May

If you drain your battery, this car cannot even open the rear door since there is no inside hatch.

25 Mar

I didn't know I'd done it and the next morning the battery was dead. Really???

15 Sep

Battery died after 3 months.

10 Mar

The transmission is fine, a light foot is needed to get the most of the CVT on starts and provides smooth acceleration up to driving speeds.

6 Jun

Cold start up can sometimes give a stumble or hesitation when first shifting out of park, this problem cannot be duplicated regularly.

12 Jul

It would be nice if they tightened up the handling a bit--I read that the 2020 may address this. Transmission.

21 May

The shifter has 5 positions: P, R, N, D and M. The manual mode requires shifting to drive then pulling the selector towards the driver, so you’ll never engage it by accident when selecting drive.

7 Mar

I personally love the CVT transmission as we live in Tennessee and you don't have that annoying hunting for a gear downshifting and upshifting going thru the mountains.

20 Jan

But the Outback's 2.5L combined with the CVT transmission really lags in performance on the highway and Subaru should have addressed that already.

6 Nov

The responsive 7-speed transmission, Black Metal Flake Paint and lush Brown and Black leather seating, along with front and rear heated seats, presents a quality package.

10 Mar

The transmission is fine, a light foot is needed to get the most of the CVT on starts and provides smooth acceleration up to driving speeds.

15 Jul

The engine at low speeds makes noise,

6 Jun

The Eyesight system will sometimes give a warning when entering a curve at speed limit sensing guard rails on the edge of the road.

29 Sep

The road manners are disappointing - seems to drift a lot and jump when going over bumps at higher speeds.

10 Sep

Road noise definitely increases with speed.

21 May

The throttle response is also much improved over earlier Subaru models, it’s no longer overly touchy at slow speeds.

26 Feb

And the adaptive cruise control is a blast, it lowers the speed until it brakes on a light with a car in front of you - if there is no car, it keeps going.

21 Feb

Problems dealer has not been able to resolve: Vibration at high speeds inspite of new tires and repeated balance and alignment, Excessive vibration when AC is on, Dashboard rattles, Shutter when turning right.

20 Jan

but can be a little unnerving at speed on a crowded interstate, especially when a jersey wall is present.

This has yet to come out :-( -Speakers/radio - The radio is constantly trying to find an HD radio station, when it does it will increase the bass and sound amazing.

30 Aug

After all routine maintenance, the engine bearing failed on my car @ 56,000 miles.

Add this to the experience my wife had with the engine in her '12 Outback failing at 120K and requiring almost $5000 in repairs and I have gone off the brand.

22 Jun

The dealership tried and the engine would cut out-our local Subaru disconnected it and it worked perfectly after that.

30 Aug

Subaru repair cost = $11,000 just for the engine.

15 Feb

This engine is a bit different.

3 Oct

My only real complaint is the sub-par acceleration with the 2.0 engine and the CVT.

20 Jul

-CVT Engine: My only complaint with the CVT is when you are going from Reverse or Park to Drive - There is a significant lag time of 1-2 seconds for the gears to catch.

19 Apr

For me, engine noise is not an issue.

24 Jul

I really liked my last Subaru Legacy -- it was a great car.

7 Apr

I have experienced a lot of rattles, no drycleaning/cloths hook in the vehicle, no temp gauge-just a light like my father's 1973 Impala wagon, cargo compartment has dismal dim light.

24 Mar

First they were minor like the driver door seems a little loose and sort of rattles when closing, Rear view mirror lost grip and have to be adjusted very carefully etc.

29 Dec

but the road noise is uncomfortable on the highway, especially long trips.

26 Mar

My only issues where with the road noise level and there was a rattle in the fan when the heat or AC was on.

8 Jun

but the dealer who worked on the vehicle screwed up the repair and the engine continued to make a tapping noise up until when I sold it at 25k miles.

5 Mar

Around the same time, the exhaust started rattling again!

25 Jan

Road noise is a bit higher than the Mazda I drove,

3 Dec

It is ridiculously loud inside the car-when I am driving the road noise is deafening.

3 Jul

One year later, there is a really loud and annoying noise coming from underneath the rear exhaust system whenever I put the car in reverse.

27 Jan

There was a grinding noise on cold start-up attributed to excessive rod clearance.

18 Dec

The drivers seat bottom material had to be replaced at 34,000 miles due to cracking.

24 Aug

At 45K, the 2.5 engine was not holding oil and the dealer gave me a rental and it took a week to make the major repair and complete replacement of many key parts.

16 Aug

no oil leaks engine uses it so there must be some kind of engine defect using the oil up.

26 Feb

The seats rips , poor performance the engine repair(gasket failed $3,000)

30 Jul

I have had numerous issues like rust (yes, rust on a 3-year old car), unresolved excessive oil consumption, completely new A/C (condenser, expansion valve & compressor).

8 Jun

The main issue with these engines has yet to be resolved, and it is not uncommon to have to keep getting the short block replaced every time is starts to consume oil.

26 Apr

.later to be told I needed a $1,500 repair to CVT Valve body.

3 Jul

There is a weird squeak when I turn the wheel, and the engine has this really cheap-sounding rhythmic sound when running at low speeds when I accelerate, which might have something to do with the belt.

20 Jun

Many engine problems with this car leaks sensors air conditioning dealer has fixed issues

21 Jan

but the engine consumed a huge amount of oil before 100k miles and now the tranmission is having problems at 98k miles too.

10 Jan

The Bad: The car has had the following repairs under warranty: power steering, transmission, engine rebuild.

5 Mar

I had exhaust rattling issues right after the regular warranty ran out.

3 Jul

Needless to say, with this number of problems within the first 15 months of having the Forester, there is no way I would ever keep this car outside of warranty.

27 Jan

The short block was replaced at approx 18K miles because it failed the oil consumption test (bad rings- Subaru extended warranty to 100K for oil consumption issues).

20 Jan

even though technically out of warranty and Im waiting to hear if they will cover the control arm issue.

18 Dec

Subaru extended the cvt warranty due to issues.

but thankful it was under warranty), and I was told to bring the car back 1200 miles later for another oil consumption test (coming up), do not add oil if the oil light comes up and they will replace the engine if it goes while under the warranty.

20 Jan

I have a 2014 Forester with less than 36,000 on it and so far the air conditioning needed replacing and now the right front lower control arm rubber bushing is completely worn out.

15 Jan

Heater is not as good as some 4 cyl in cold weather.

24 Apr

Have had a front strut replaced and TWICE the A/C has gone out.

21 Sep

On the other hand, there is no temperature gauge, just a blue idiot light that goes out when the engine warms up.

4 Aug

That means the oil is better in low temp conditions, the weight is measured by viscosity.

8 Dec

5 May

Steering has poor feedback and handling is scary at 80mph+.

18 Feb

There are trucks that ride better than this Legacy.

17 May

Far superior to the 2011 Subaru Forester, 2012 Subaru Outback, and the 2014 Legacy - all of which I purchased brand new and had harsh rides, uncomfortable seats, and a heating system that blow very loudly on high when you selected "floor mode"

15 Oct

I had a friend buy a 2016 Legacy based on her loving my car.

17 May

I owned a 2001 Subaru Outback station wagon for 6 years and it was reliable and a comfortable ride with reasonable handling in not too large of a vehicle.

7 Jul

We also noticed in the winter/cold weather that the transmission had a slight vibration in the front when braking.

18 Feb

Car is very noisy, hate the CVT.

21 Nov

At speeds of 80 to 90 miles per hour and the vehicle structure is solid, little bit of noise

10 Nov

At 40000 miles the heat shields start to rattle.

24 Jan

Everything rattled.

13 Dec

The driver and passenger seats to squeak some and that does drive me a little crazy.

23 Jun

but the comfort aspects of the car, especially climate control and noise level, are really lacking.

24 Feb

The 2014 is nothing like the 2006 starting with the CVT..noisy and takes 3 seconds to engage going from reverse to drive.

27 Oct

The ride could be smoother and the road noise is extremely noisy, which makes it hard to use the Bluetooth.

21 Apr

Intermittent rattle - something in the moon roof rattles occasionally, it seems to happen only within certain temperature ranges, its a bit annoying.

7 Jul

I personally hate CVT transmissions, especially the one in the 2013 Subaru Legacy.

24 Jun

Anyway, at 158,000 miles, the transmission was acting strange.

28 Sep

but lacks on quality the transmission went out at 91k and engine was replaced at 98k due to excessive oil consumption.

24 Feb

The feel of the trans is terrible.

30 Sep

Flaw two and three lie in the transmission.

21 Apr

Acceleration/transmission- CVT transmission takes some getting used to, feels like driving a golf cart- acceleration is a bit slow,

18 Oct

Traveling down the interstate with a well cared for 2012 Subaru Legacy when the car started shaking badly and the engine light came on.

25 May

Average if you have to replace the small block motor because it uses a quart of oil every couple of thousand miles!

21 Nov

Definitely, it was a challenge to find a 3.6R means H-6 engine with low mileage

10 Nov

I thought it was the engine making noise.

28 Sep

but lacks on quality the transmission went out at 91k and engine was replaced at 98k due to excessive oil consumption.

30 Sep

The car has grown is size & weight yet the engine has not.

21 Apr

I typically have to add a quart of oil 6000 miles after an oil change, as the engine uses some oil.
