Shopping for a good SUV I've always held Explorer near the top of my list from past experience — and because no one (other than the VW Atlas) seems to give the driver enough basic space.

10 Jul

The engine transmission is not smooth, actually is very rough, the automatic transmission makes the car jerk while shifting .

19 Dec

However, the ride quality can be a little stiff.

The covering on the dash feels like a rough piece of cardboard and not an covering for a very pricey suv that the Explorer, at first glance, seems to be.

17 Sep

2020 Explorer ST. On the positive side this vehicle looks great!

9 Jul

The 1-2 and 2-1 shifts on the transmission were a little harsh at first and have smoothed out.

7 Jul

.. problem is it’s spent almost 3 weeks in the shop over multiple stints for electrical issues, a transmission issue and now more electrical problems and a front axel fix of some sort to boot.

11 Jun

only one year old with less than 20K and the transmission begins having issues.

12 May

1500 miles recall for transmission cooler, backing into carport put in reverse car remains stationary return to dealer the trans cooler recall caused the valve body in transmission to go out.

2 Apr

The transmission is terrible feels like it's going to fall out.

2 Mar

Twice for transmission issues and now again for 4x4 at fault which has been determined to be the front driver axel.

17 Feb

at 6600 miles the transmission ( never what you would call smooth ) began loud jolting jarring shifts and other erratic behaviors.

27 Jan

I have 8 months with the truck and it has been damaged: the backup camera, the transmission, the rear door, the radio, every month I have to take it to the dealer to have it checked

9 Jan

The transmission was replaced after 40 days in the shop.

27 Jun

Little or no road noise inside the vehicle.

12 May

Now between 15-35 mph has a heavy vibration “that’s a common characteristic with a 4 cylinder engine”after being told by one technician that it shouldn’t be vibrating like this.

15 Sep

By the end of 2019, I had to put it in the shop for a whining/grinding noise when accelerating.

9 Aug

The ride is horrible—mostly jerky shifting and a lot of road noise.

8 Aug

The engine is loud clanking noises.

24 Jul

This noise only happens when moving and increases in volume to a point as you gain speed.

7 Jul

Sometimes my car's auto hold system malfunction failure will come as a warning and autohold feature won't work and then all of a sudden after restarting the issue will go away.

11 Jun

they are faulty and Ford is doing nothing to fix the problem.

15 Sep

By 2,000 miles, the backup camera has failed multiple times, the screen glitches a lot, and when the A/C is on, heat will come out on the passenger side sometimes.

15 Sep

Once the part was out in place the dealership failed to do there due diligence and the car broke down on me the day after picking it up.

4 Aug

Unfortunately my transmission and computer system both failed at less than 6 months of ownership.

21 May

Cons: a little too much plastic in the cabin, and the transmission failed with only 331 miles on the car!

7 Jul

Someday, the camera will not work, and all of a sudden it will start to respond after restarting the car.

27 Jan

I have 8 months with the truck and it has been damaged: the backup camera, the transmission, the rear door, the radio, every month I have to take it to the dealer to have it checked

9 Jan

The back up camera has also been replaced.

26 Dec

That said, before the transmission and back up camera went out the only complaint I had was the very loud 4 cylinder engine.

2 Dec

Backup camera has worked intermittently since I drove it off the lot in April and this last time in the shop It was supposed to finally be replaced as cameras have been on backorder.

15 Sep

By 2,000 miles, the backup camera has failed multiple times, the screen glitches a lot, and when the A/C is on, heat will come out on the passenger side sometimes.

Still hate the rearview camera and lack of screen resolution.

24 Nov

Should have adaptable suspension for a 60k price tag.

2 Sep

The auto-start-stop isn't rough, only slightly noticeable if the radio is off,

10 Jul

The engine transmission is not smooth, actually is very rough, the automatic transmission makes the car jerk while shifting .

7 May

The all wheel drive front suspension has an array of clunks and rattles, and the engine is much noisier than the previous 2016 and 2012 models I have owned.

19 Dec

However, the ride quality can be a little stiff.

15 Dec

Only issue I have is the ST has a stiffer ride then wgat I am used too.

2 Nov

The covering on the dash feels like a rough piece of cardboard and not an covering for a very pricey suv that the Explorer, at first glance, seems to be.

26 Oct

but the dash material is rather rough, so wiping it down even with a microfiber cloth seems to scratch it.

14 Oct

I am 6-1” and after the hip replacement I could not get into a 2018 as my leg is too stiff.

25 Jan

This was a perfect vehicle until my kids out grew the Explorer and some CO2 issues.

31 Jul

One day the heated steering wheel came on by itself, then the A/C.

3 Mar

There are numerous rattles inside the cabin which annoy me and the fan noise is very loud.

29 Jul

I cannot believe the cooling capacity on the 2019 is so bad.

4 Mar

I'm also not a fan of how truck-like the dashboard is.

12 Jun

The air goes from very warm to suddenly I can feel cold coming out vents and this transition from hot to cold again takes a while to happen, so on a hot day I might roast for the first 5 to 10 miles.

8 Dec

Jerks when shifts and makes a grinding noise.

3 Mar

it was in the shop for 2 weeks and they stripped out all the lining and rebuilt it only for it to still rattle.

22 Jun

I thought it may be the transmission.

10 Mar

Had its oil change and changed the transmission fluid.

5 Jan

Additionally, there is no transmission fluid dipstick and thus it is tricky and expensive to have transmission fluid checked - which becomes necessary if buying these cars used.

Have to keep taking it to dealer to have transmission fluid added.

27 Mar

When I bought this car I was a little apprehensive because it does have high mileage two years in and I had to replace the transmission at a cost of $5,000.

27 Feb

but the grande finale of my escape was the transmission dying after only 100,000 miles.

27 Jan

Cat converter issues (probably leads to replacement) and Flex plate which requires taking down the whole transmission system to replace which costs a ton of money.

1 Nov

The transmission went out at 78,600.

5 Jan

18 Oct

25 Sep

but no check engine lights nothing.

31 Jul

I’m now used to the eco mode when it turns off as I’m stopped a light.

14 Mar

I love the yellow warning lights when a car is next to me and the beeping noise it makes when I'm pulling out of a parking spot.

28 Nov

Headlights could be better.

7 Aug

It has the little wide-angle mirrors in the corner of the side view mirrors to check my blind spot rather than idiot lights that tell me a car is right there.

5 Feb

On the outside door pillar is a keypad which lights up to open.

13 Aug

14 Mar

8 Mar

29 Jan

I've had no mechanical problem, except having to replace the battery for a 6 year old car!

3 Jan

The car is useless it is a 2018 and has battery issues.

8 Oct

You have to remove the wipers and cowl to change the battery, the wipers have to be recalibrated every time you remove them, and I occasionally get a random LOW BRAKE FLUID warning despite my fluid being perfectly full.

21 Apr

Extremely poor design and worst documentation when it comes to the battery.

10 Mar

but i'm not a fan of the cheap plastic interior not very solid like some previous vehicles in the past.

18 Feb

Alternator was replaced along with timing belt and water pump, also a/c system and air compressor was shot!

21 Jan

12 Dec

Three visits for losing coolant, two visits for my radio not working and two visits for my hvac changing temperature and modes on its own.

25 Sep

Let it cool for a bit turned it back on and drove fine after no over heating nothing for about a month.

31 Jul

I don’t care for the fan speed and temp setting knob either, they should actually be reversed for an easier time adjusting.

4 Mar

Not a fan of the tan cloth and black plastic interior.

19 Oct

Apparently, it caused heating issues at higher speeds which apparently damaged the transmission.

There was also some wind noise coming from front passenger door frame/window; maybe just a gasket issue.

but still needed repair, had part of the front suspension replaced/repaired and right now it is in the shop because it died on me and there is a new knocking noise when I turn left.

1 Sep

Today, i still hear some creaks and noises from back door panel area that are not consistent so i can't pin point where it's coming from.

23 Jul

Ruff ride and excessive noise inside cab of vehicle

25 Feb

Update 2/28/2020 Original OEM tires were very poor on wear, and noise, replaced with a different brand and improved noise and handling.

18 Jan

The road noise can get a bit loud on Texas highways

16 Aug

Two months in on a long road trip the check engine light and some towing lights came on.

18 May

Just had my first repair at 100,300 miles--left headlight burned out.

15 Oct

Dealer told me if the lights go on and it doesn't accelerate, drive it right to the dealership and don't turn the car off.

12 Jul

Update: water pump just teplaced, left and right axles replaced, reverse lights replaced, and the cowel grill panel was also replaced.

30 May

BUT EVERY OTHER LIGHT IN THE SUV - to include the interior, high beams, and side lights, are yellow incadecent bulbs that don't give off any light! SMH.

10 May

4 months later the Engine malfunction light went on and it progressively got more jerky during gear shirt change.

24 Sep

The vehicle has exhibited some strange quirks, like an erratic idle at stop lights, since getting the new software.

3 Aug

I was on my way to Chattanooga, TN last week when the wrench light came on and the SUV lost its ability to travel over 3 miles per hour.

18 Jul

About 2.5hrs into the trip all of a sudden my 2016 Ford Explorer with 8400 miles started sputtering and running rough and I when I pressed on the gas nothing happened and the wrench light, check engine light and air bag light all came on.

10 Jul

Today (Saturday) as I was driving home from errands on a busy street, the Explorer started to shimmy, engine light came on and I was basically without power.

16 May

Repairs included new timing belt, front hubs and navigation screen and now the car is throwing an “catastrophic error” mechanics words not mine and check engine light flashing once in awhile.

18 May

The Infotainment Navigation system is awful outdated and slow, virtually useless.

12 Jul

I had an oil leak before my first service, i had a navigation issue from the very beginning, a recall on the sync that they didn't call a recall

30 May

The GPS system is weak as well, requiring you to spell everything out, and the mapping isn't the best, maybe a 2.5 out of 5 stars for the onboard GPS system for having tiny font.

27 Dec

Anyone know what we can do about the door issue with all the other recalls going on with all of their other cars???

2 Nov

I am disappointed with this vehicle in that within the first year of purchase under 15,000 miles the transmission went out with a snap ring failure inside the clutch and additional sensor issues.

5 Aug

however, after reading about repeat failures of the same, I am VERY concerned with when it might next fail.

3 Aug

Our first mistake was taking delivery of this vehicle with a known cruise control system and other supporting features failure.

13 Jul

but like some of the other customers on this site a faulty throttle body causes concern.

7 Sep

but we decided to scale down to an Explorer, which was a great vehicle but just not the same!

5 Jun

Sadly Ford has continued it's poor paint quality control and even after having Ford repaint this, at 34k miles under it's 36k warranty, it started peeling within months and Ford chose not to fix it for free.

8 Jun

My 2008 peeled within 2 years after purchase and I had to sue to get it fixed.

31 Oct

Unhappy about non-covered corrosion/paint flaking off hood and liftgate at 2 years old.

7 Sep

It has so much more power that I actually have to be careful when accelerating or I'll invariably leave precious tread on the road from peeling out.

5 Jun

It now has paint blisters over 4 inches by 8 inches all along the rear tailgate and smaller ones across the front of the hood.

27 Nov

There are some scratches and paint bubbling that we will repair, as it looks almost brand-new.

8 Jun

Sadly Ford continues to allow it's paint vendors to continue doing shoddy paint work at the expense of the consumer.

The Explorer was the vehicle i wanted to purchase

22 Jun

I thought it may be the transmission.

22 Jun

I also had to replace the transmission.

10 Mar

Had its oil change and changed the transmission fluid.

5 Jan

Additionally, there is no transmission fluid dipstick and thus it is tricky and expensive to have transmission fluid checked - which becomes necessary if buying these cars used.

4 Jan

Have to keep taking it to dealer to have transmission fluid added.

22 Oct

Worked great and then three months after I paid it off, the transmission completely failed.

I bought my escape late Sept. 2019, didnt have it not even 24 hours transmission went out, well the dealership installs another one, that had 44,000 miles on it "used", it had 119,000 miles on it of course some stuff goes bad,

13 Jul

Less than 2 years later the transmission went out.

27 Mar

When I bought this car I was a little apprehensive because it does have high mileage two years in and I had to replace the transmission at a cost of $5,000.

13 Aug

Road noise a bit loud.

27 Feb

For the first year my only complaint was how much the cabin rattled, other then that I was in love.

10 Dec

No weird noises.

31 Jul

It’s a bit noisy on the road

22 Jul

In that time I have had a roof leak, sunroof creak and a transmission rebuild.

8 Mar

However, there are so many noises this car makes!

7 Feb

however it makes a noise in the back that can't be found.

18 Feb

My Escape is wonderful, except for a constant, bothersome buzz from the center console.

25 Sep

I'm rather disappointed in myself for not investigating the problem with highway speed wind noise.

26 Jul

Steers different, very responsive.Road noise not as good as other cars I have ridden in.

5 Jan

Check engine light came on as soon as I got home from the dealership after purchase, and in retrospect should have asked for a refund.

21 Jan

December 2019, After sitting in the garage all weekend I go to start it Monday morning - has a major misfire and smells of burnt gas and oil mix, after a few seconds it cleared up (no check engine light).

18 Oct

The engine light came on, I checked this with my OBD computer and it read cylinder misfire.

31 Jul

I’m now used to the eco mode when it turns off as I’m stopped a light.

5 Feb

On the outside door pillar is a keypad which lights up to open.

23 Oct

My only complaint is the Tire pressure lights continues to come on after servicing.

12 Jun

Then the engine light came on during a trip to Florida.

18 Jul

My only gripe is the hoops you have to jump through to change driving lights, parking lights and front turn signals.

22 Oct

This is obviously a manufacturer defect and should be recalled.

27 Feb

I took it to ford paid 75-150 to have it “diagnosed” only to be told it was an electric malfunction and would cost 600 to replace the handle.. clearly not worth it.

20 Dec

I never had a pleasant experience with the car since I passed 80,000 mile (now at 103,000) so I don't drive it if I have to go on long trips because I know it'll fail me as it did every time.

8 Oct

In short, it's never failed to start or move.

29 Aug

While I appreciate that the manufacturer issued the safety recalls, I think that their quality control is lacking and could have avoided these recalls.

20 Dec

the only upside is the interior design that looks nice and easy to control at the steering wheel and the navigation/radio panel.

12 May

however, is the radio.

25 Aug

I had a transmission fluid leak at 38000 miles that was repaired under the warranty.

16 May

Paid a lot of money for this car 10,000 miles after warranty expired we have spent approximately $7,000 on repairs not maintenance things like brakes, tires and spark plugs.

30 Mar

the first time I tried and went forward again the car sounded like the whole bottom was going to fall out and when I call the dealer the Preston warranty that came with them certifying the car only covers engine.

2 Dec

Tried to get to replace and they about it and said it was a control arm so it's not covered under the power train warranty.

3 Jun

No issues for about maybe 6 months then All of a sudden I’m packing into a parking spot and work and my suv start jolting so violently I had to just put it in park and leave it where it was.

14 Feb

The parking brake warning light came on and I traced that to some broken wires, which I repaired myself rather than taking another hour-long drive.

31 Dec

The heated seats/steering wheel make cold mornings better and with automatic folding mirrors, you don’t have to worry about getting around mirrors when parking in tight spots.

We have had no rattles or squeaks - the only issue is that on an intermittent basis the brakes want to squeak - I can hear the echo when we are in a drive through.

17 May

My wife has heard the noise and my dad who used to be a Ford mechanic.

14 Feb

The only con I had was shortly after I purchased the vehicle and a rattling noise was coming from the driver's side door speaker.

4 Dec

The engine has loosened up and is still a quiet cruiser, the transmission likes to drop a couple of gears when climbing mountains which can get noisy, I have found dropping the cruise 5 mph eases the stress as it will change up a gear.

5 Oct

Not a single squeak.

14 Sep

Now for some of the cons; the Edge has some noises inside.

12 Jan

Why did the engine fail so soon after the first repair?

29 Nov

A month later the same thing..Got stranded with a totally drained battery..After months of electronic failures from the Ford Edge..we decided to trade it in.

28 Mar

Last we'd heard our vehicle was taken to a glass shop and the windshield resealed, which failed to stop the leaking.

20 Jul

but a week in I had to take it back to the dealership to have work done on the Trans and brakes (at 30,000 miles) fast forward 3 months and I'm ready to trade it in!

14 Oct

They kept the vehicle most of the day and called back later that evening stating that's what it was and they needed to pull the transmission to determine how much damage is done (I think they said something crankshaft, torque converter, etc.).

16 May

When going at low speeds, say 15 mph, it's not at all smooth - it's like the engine or transmission is trying to find the right setting.

3 Jul

Despite all the complaints about how hard the electronics are to use, we find little or no issues with the nav, Hvac & radio controls.

27 May

The controls are not intuitive - I found the radio hard to operate (and annoying when it decides to do its own thing), the GPS hard to use, the heater / air con very hard to use.

24 Dec
